Previously, I have taught keyboardig at CVCA high school, therefore, teaching keyboarding to 3rd graders was an expiriment. Could the students learn how to type with proper technique? The answer is definetely yes. Actually, teaching 3rd grade students how to type is easier than teaching 7th through 12th graders. The reason being that bad habits have not been formed yet.
Typing lesson can sometimes be boring. Therefore, I did not want to have grammar school students to spend 40 minutes of constant typing. Which is why I purposely mixed typing in with their other projects and lessons. For example, the first ten minutes of class would be learning a new key. The last thirty minutes would be focused upon the project. I also used the webites to the right to assist with the prevention of student boredom.
Assessments were completed on a one on one basis. Meaning that the rubric below was used when grading each student. Students would be given a sentence such as: The sad dad had glass fall. Depending on which keys were learned that week, the sentence would change.
Evaluation I believe that the typing lessons went smoothly. The hardest challenge occured with the 7th and 8th grade students who developed bad habits. Some of these students did not want to change their techniques. However, students did begin to accept the my method of typing after viewing some their class mates begin to type without looking at the keyboard. This skill will be used throught their entire lives.
